Making Calls and Texting while Traveling

It’s hard to imagine not having a phone while traveling.  Calls, tests, quick look-ups: we need our phones!

The best way to find out if your phone will work where you’re headed to is to call  customer service for your carrier and see if you can add international calling/texting to your plan. BE SURE to determine if your phone actually supports this service!!!

Here’s another option: VIBER. Viber is a mobile application that allows you to make phone calls and send text messages to all other Viber users for free! Viber is available over WiFi or 3G. Sound quality is much better than a regular call. Once you and your friends install Viber, you can use it to talk and message as much as you want. Talk, message, and talk and message some more – for free!* You can also call any number that doesn’t have Viber at low rates using ViberOut.     http://www.viber.com/faq

Here’s what NOT to do: Buy a phone in Italy with all instructions in Italian and then leave the store without knowing how to work it. How do I know this? Yes, I did. (My standard operating line, “How tough can it be?” clearly failed me, as did my Italian language cd, lessons 1-4.)
